Scott Riggs, American Red Cross

“What people don’t know about the Red Cross is that we are local. 95% of what I do is single family fires. You never hear about that stuff you hear about the big national news, but most of our work is in your neighborhood. Once I started doing [family fire response] I thought, “This is what I was meant to do.”

Each case [of a family fire] is a little bit different. Some people want hugs, some people just want to get through it and some people are just so in shock. We learn not to be in a hurry. If it’s raining and 2 o’clock in the morning and 35 degrees outside, but they just need 20 minutes to talk- that’s okay. That’s what we’re there for.”
